Shotley Gate is an area to the south of the village of Shotley at the tip of the peninsula which also harbours HMS Ganges, a former Royal Navy training establishment.
With the arrival of HMS Ganges (the fourth ship of the name) off the Suffolk coast, work started on constructing the shore establishment with the first buildings being Temporary Sick Quarters. This was completed in 1903 and the decision was taken at that time to commence the construction of accommodation for the Boys ashore. On 4th October 1905 the new Barracks ‘The Royal Navy Training Establishment, Shotley’ was commissioned.
HMS Ganges herself (the ship) left Shotley in July 1906 for Chatham leaving her Figurehead to remain at Shotley as a reminder.
From 1906 until 1976 HMS Ganges was an uncompromising Training Establishment for the Royal Navy, designed to transform “Boys into Men” fit to serve in His/Her Majesty’s Fleet.
The premium site of HMS Ganges is now being developed into a large mixed residential housing area which has been careful to keep notes of its history, like the tall ships mast that was used as part of the Naval cadets training.
